LED Downlight Installation Guide Pakistan — Step by Step (DIY)
Installing LED downlights in a false ceiling is one of the most common home improvement tasks in Pakistan. With the right tools and basic electrical knowledge, most homeowners can install downlights themselves in a few hours. This guide covers the complete process from cutting the hole to wiring the light.
Safety warning: Always turn off the mains circuit breaker before working on any electrical wiring. If unsure about any step, consult a licensed electrician.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Hole saw drill bit (3-inch or 4-inch depending on your downlight size)
- Drill machine, wire stripper, electrical tape or insulated connectors, voltage tester
- Pencil and compass for marking holes
- Deltalite LED downlights (Globe, COB, or Frameless Panel)
Step 1 — Plan Your Layout
For bedrooms: 2-4 downlights spaced evenly. Drawing rooms: 4-6 downlights in a grid pattern. Corridors: one light every 1.2-1.5 metres. See our room-by-room guide for detailed placement recommendations.
Step 2 — Check for Obstructions
Before drilling, check for obstructions above the false ceiling — wiring, water pipes, gas pipes, or ceiling structure. Leave at least 10cm clearance around any pipe.
Step 3 — Cut the Holes
- 3-inch Globe downlight: 75mm hole saw
- 4-inch Globe or COB: 95-100mm hole saw
- Frameless panels: use the included drilling template
Not sure which size to get? Read our 3 inch vs 4 inch downlight guide.
Step 4 — Run the Wiring
Use 1.5mm² or 2.5mm² copper wire for downlights up to 18W. Leave 25-30cm of wire through each hole for comfortable connection.
Step 5 — Connect the Downlight
- Strip 12mm of insulation from the wire ends
- Connect live (phase) wire to the L terminal — red/brown wire
- Connect neutral to N terminal — blue/black wire
- Use insulated connectors or wrap with electrical tape
- Connect earth wire to the green/yellow terminal if present
Step 6 — Mount the Downlight
Spring clips: squeeze inward, insert light, release. Adjustable clips (Frameless panels): screw clips adjust to ceiling thickness. The light should sit flush with the ceiling surface.
Step 7 — Test Before Finishing
Turn power back on. Check for full brightness (no flickering), correct colour temperature, stable operation after 5 minutes. If a light flickers, check wire connections.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Cutting holes too large — the bezel will not cover an oversized hole
- Placing lights too close to walls — maintain at least 30cm from walls
- Not checking for obstructions before drilling
- Installing without turning off the breaker
